TORRE IN PIETRA

Roma DOC – Lazio Coast, Italy

Just a short drive from the center of Rome, Castello di Torre in Pietra is a remarkable estate where centuries of tradition, natural beauty, and sustainability come together in one of Lazio’s most unique terroirs. The estate’s heart is a medieval castle village, once owned by the family of Pope Sixtus V, where wine has been produced since the 16th century.

While today the estate is known for its vibrant organic wines, Torre in Pietra has long been a center of agricultural excellence. In the 20th century, it was one of Italy’s most advanced dairy farms, introducing modern techniques in animal husbandry and land stewardship. That same spirit of innovation continues in the vineyards and winery today.

Now under the care of Filippo Antonelli and Lorenzo Majnoni, both respected names in Italian winemaking, the estate spans 150 hectares of rolling hills, including 52 hectares of certified organic vineyards and large tracts of olive groves, vegetable gardens, wild meadows, and forests. The diverse ecosystem creates a natural harmony that supports soil health, pest control, and vine vitality—making Torre in Pietra a model of sustainable farming.

The vineyards, sitting just 50 meters above sea level, benefit from the region’s volcanic tuff soils and Mediterranean breezes. Grapes like Vermentino, Fiano, Malvasia Puntinata, Cesanese, Syrah, and Merlot thrive here, producing expressive wines that reflect both the warmth of Lazio and the freshness of the coastal influence.

Winemaking takes place in a dramatic underground cellar carved into volcanic stone beneath the castle. Originally dug in the 1500s, the cellar offers ideal conditions for fermentation and aging, combining ancient architecture with modern organic principles.

Visitors are welcomed with tastings, tours, and meals at the estate’s charming Osteria dell’Elefante, where the wines pair perfectly with seasonal dishes and house-made olive oil. With its rich agricultural history, ecological focus, and deep Roman roots, Castello di Torre in Pietra is not just a winery—it’s a living, breathing story of the land.
