Wines That are Good and Good for the Planet

Over the years more and more wine lovers have been looking for sustainably produced organic wines, so it has become my mission to find the best and bring them to you. That is why I am so excited to share Fasoli Gino Estate wines with all my friends.

Located in the prestigious Valpollicella wine region in northeastern Italy, the Fasoli Gino Estate is the producer of the glorious Alteo, a classic, yet very special, Amarone wine. What makes this wine so special?  For me it's the marriage of big bold heat (high alcohol 17%) and an almost velvety smoothness that makes you want to lean back and slowly meditate over the bouquet. The secret behind this unique wine experience is a process of wine making called “appassimento” which employs a method of partially drying the grapes before pressing. They have boldly applied this technique to merlot and pinot nero and the results are astounding!

As far as big reds go, I love Veneto wines and Fasoli Gino is one of my top picks for this region.

How you grow, produce and handle grapes matters

In 1984, Fasoli Gino Estate (nestled into the hills near Verona, Italy) started producing organic wines. By 2006 they also began employing biodynamic practices. Biodynamic agriculture means wine made using a holistic approach that relies on organic composting and fertilizer, instead of chemicals. At Fasoli Gino Estate, that special care used in the growing, also extends to the handling and processing of the fruit, post-harvest. You would never know these wines are organic; they are huge and very, very sassy.

A full line of sass

Here’s the list of their top-tier wines where the appassimento process is employed:

  • Igino Rosso Veronese Cabernet Sauvignon IGT
  • Valpo Valpolicella Ripasso Superiore DOCG
  • Alteo Amarone della Valpolicella DOC Classico
  • Sande Rosso Veronese IGT Pinot Nero
  • Orgno Rosso Veronese Merlot IGT

Each of the wines have over 16% alcohol, yet they are some of the most balanced and elegant you'll find. Currently we have all five wines, but in very limited quantities.

Another important detail about Fasoli Gino, is that they also manage a wine relais (luxury boutique resort) where you can spend time relaxing atop the Veronese hillside. They invite you to dine in style, drink their fabulous wines and experience wine-based spa treatments. When I paid them a visit, it was perhaps one of the best work trips I’ve ever had!

Contact Marina to bring these sought-after wines to your restaurant or shop our wine store to bring them to your home table.
